I just returned from two days of reporting at the United Nations, where diplomats and civil society groups met to discuss a potential new treaty to regulate Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems. As a journalist who’s covered the UN for nearly 20 years, my takeaway is this: despite the gridlock that often paralyzes UN negotiations, a binding treaty establishing rules and norms for these weapons is very much within reach.
